How to calculate hours between two times

Enter a start time and an end time, then press Calculate Hours. Dayvilo shows the total duration as hours and minutes and as decimal hours. For example, 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes, or 8.5 hours.

Decimal hours for timesheets

Decimal hours are useful for payroll and timesheets, where 30 minutes is written as 0.5. Dayvilo converts the minutes for you so you can copy the figure straight into a spreadsheet or invoice.

Overnight shifts across midnight

If the end time is earlier than the start time, Dayvilo assumes the period runs overnight and counts across midnight. A shift from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is correctly measured as 8 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the hours between two times?

Enter a start time and an end time. Dayvilo shows the total duration in hours and minutes, along with the equivalent in decimal hours.

What are decimal hours?

Decimal hours express minutes as a fraction of an hour, so 8 hours 30 minutes becomes 8.5 hours. This format is common on timesheets and invoices.

What if the end time is earlier than the start time?

Dayvilo assumes the period crosses midnight and counts into the next day. For example, 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is measured as 8 hours, and the result notes that it crosses midnight.

Does this calculate my break time?

The calculator measures the full duration between the two times. To exclude an unpaid break, subtract the break length from the total yourself.
